On the 4th of march we'll be partying over at our new venue: Ekko. This great place is able to stash a few more punters than our former venue so we need you to tell aaaallll of your friends about the nice eclectic mix of "reggae / dancehall / ska / dubstep / jungle / whatever bassmusic they feel needs a spin" the friends of the Elephant collective put on the player. If you do that and bring all or some of them to this event, we would be very happy. It would make for a nice dance, which is all we're after. Reggae star Buju Banton to fight drug charge

Banton waived his bail hearing Wednesday in Miami federal court. His case is being prosecuted in Tampa, where he will be transferred.

U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff issued a temporary order of detention for the 36-year-old singer, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie.

Banton did not speak at the hearing, except to reply, "Yes, sir," to the judge's questions. Like the other 10 jail inmates waiting in the courtroom, he wore a beige jail jumpsuit over a white T-shirt, with his long dreadlocks tied up off his neck and his hands shackled in front of him.

"He believes that because the indictment was filed out of Tampa, that's where the case should be defended," Banton's attorney, Herbert E. Walker III, said after the hearing.

Banton has been in federal custody since last Thursday. He is charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine.

Walker said the charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

According to a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration affidavit, Banton and two others traveled to Sarasota last week to purchase a large amount of cocaine from an undercover law enforcement officer. The DEA was tipped off by a confidential informant who agreed to wear a recording device during the drug negotiation session.

Banton's attorney said the singer is "completely innocent" of the charges against him.

"He's a very spiritual person," Walker said. "He has a lot of faith in God. He's confident he's going to be exonerated."

The husky-voiced Banton has been a major star in his native Jamaica since the early 1990s with brash dancehall music and, more recently, a traditional reggae sound. His career has been stunted in the United States because of some song lyrics that advocated violence against gay men.

Earlier this month, Banton's ninth album, "Rasta Got Soul," was nominated for a Grammy for best reggae album.

Tonight will be a special night, with the theme *Global Dub* where we want to focus on mashing dub & steppas with the new global sound. Expect a lot of layers that will go deep into your body and belly!

Tonight’s special guest is Timeblind, aka Chris Sattinger from the States, who travels on many musical roads such as dancehall, jungle, hip-hop, proto-dubstep, global dub and tropical tunes. He has been part of the illustrious New York illbient scene in the early 00’s, trotted around India for a while and is currently living & working in Berlin, the hotspot for experimental music. His set will be a combination of a live PA set with a dj set in heavy global and tropical spheres! A part of his set will also be done with SuperCollider, a special software programme for real time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. Heavy. The night will be kicked off early by dubmaster DJ Daddy Don, who will spin some UK Steppas selection that will make the floor vibrate with bass. Your faithfull Rebel Up! Geen slechte omschrijving, want de reggae van deze vijf stoere mannen uit Los Angeles heeft een ruig randje door toevoeging van een dosis sixties soul. Dat laatste komt vooral door de stem van zanger Jesse Wagner: een unieke combinatie van het geluid van Otis Redding en Wilson Pickett. In juni verschijnt The Aggrolites’ vierde album (titel: IV) en komen de heren naar Europa voor de grote festivals. Gelukkig doen ze voordat ze de wei in gaan ook nog De Helling aan, want zeg nou zelf: dirty reggae gedijt het best in een donkere, zweterige ruimte!

El Hijo de la Cumbia (son of the cumbia)Just 24 years of age, this talented producer comes to Amsterdam for the first time ever!
El Hijo de la Cumbia aka Emilliano Gomez hails from the San Martin area of Buenos Aires and started his musical career in 1996. From that moment on, he took part in several Argentine Cumbia music bands. In 2000, he started listening to other musical genres originating in ghettos from all across the world, such as Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop, Jazz, Dub, etc. Very much influenced by Colombian Cumbia music, he then decided to experiment by mixing Colombian rhythms with African ones and new styles. Known as a Sonidero producer for Mexican and American bands, he has worked in the most important Mexican and US music scenes. Deze zaterdag is het weer dik aan! Naast uw vertrouwde leveranciers van dikke roots, vlammende dancehall, opruiende jungle en alles wat zich ertussen begeeft, hebben we weer een aantal internationale gasten voor je in petto.

Uit Italie afkomstig, maar al tijden rondzwervend door Europa komt Manjah Fyah. Een selecter met, net als de Elephants, een voorliefde voor de ouderwetse 7" single en juggling. Manjah is de drijvende kracht achter 90 Degree (het soundsystem en het label.)

Op de mic wordt hij bijgestaan door de uit Roemenie afkomstige mc General Trix, die de meest diverse flows van topkwaliteit uit zijn mouw schudt alsof het niets is. Denk aan een kruising tussen Gentleman en TopCat..zoiets. Lekker!

Ook op de mic: de uit Ghana afkomstige Osagyefo, die met zijn rootsy en laidback manier van zingen voor die heerlijke afrikaanse saus zorgt.

Samen vormen ze 90 Degree Sound en dat, dat is dik aan! We schreven het al..

Dorlene Love (niet te verwarren met de Amerikaanse soulzangeres Darlene Love) is een gezelschap gestoorde Zweden. Ze begonnen hun carrière als drie-akkoorden-punkband, maar toen ze in een ketel met slivovitsj vielen, raakten ze besmet zijn met het Balkanvirus, zoals te horen is op hun debuutalbum Exile Deluxe (2008). Na hun daverende optreden op Lowlands 2008 beloofde de band snel terug te komen naar Nederland, en ze hebben zich aan hun woord gehouden! Heb je na afloop van Dorlene Love in Tivoli de Helling nog energie over, dan kun je gewoon doordansen op de Balkanbeats van dj Tommi.

What better way to end the year with a special night of Eastern African sounds @ OCCII! We've got a seriously full evening lined up. It's not just a night of african disco and soukous alone as you might expect, but also we've got an extra special live set done by 3 very much respected musicians from the punk and improv scene!Our special guests of the night are Terrie Ex & Andy Moor (both The Ex) who will form a one-off impromptu trio with improv drummer Tony Buck (The Necks, AUS) who happens to be in town and feels like kicking it loud and late with us. Expect a bodyshaking afro-punk-jazz improv set into multiple directions of the african hemisphere... surely it's gonna be a tasty mash of styles, just as we like it at Rebel Up!After that, Terrie and Andy will play an Eastern African disco set, focussing on the modern folk and pop sounds from Ethiopia and Eritrea. All is not well in Sudan, Somalia, and southern parts of Ethiopia and the struggles for power are going on and on. Most affairs are hidden from the western world and rather forgotten by the media, as if things in that part of Africa aren't worth to be supported by the west. We've got an Italian friend who worked at a social UN project in Somaliland. Since the recent bomb blasts that killed 2 of her UNDP colleagues and which was followed subsequent threats by the militant Somali Al Shabaab group, she had to be relocated to Nairobi (Kenya) along with most western UN staff. She told us about a small reliable NGO project that is running in Somaliland, which always needs funds and that we would like to support on our night. This organisation specializes in giving conflict management training among tribal elders, which is the best possible approach in that region. To create awareness by teaching active ways of stopping violence between various tribes is already a good step towards a lasting peace. More information about this organisation will follow as soon as we've gotten all the name, details and websites from our friend in Nairobi (keep a tab on our website or find out on the night itself).Be sure not to miss this quality filled night, perhaps the best last party of the year~! Na 20 jaar op de Steenweg, gaat Plato Utrecht verhuizen naar de Voorstraat 35. Op loopafstand van de huidige winkel, hebben wij een pand gevonden dat tweemaal zo groot is en waar alle muziek overzichtelijk en gelijkvloers kunnen aanbieden. Nieuw is een uitgebreide vinyl afdeling, waarin alle muziek genres vertegenwoordigt zullen zijn. Behalve winkel is er ook een podium, waar wekelijks gratis toegankelijke optredens zullen zijn van een scala aan bandjes en artiesten uit binnen en buitenland. High Tone is terug in de Ekko! Na dat verplaatste en véél te korte concert in februari hebben we wat goed te maken. Dus vanavond, gegarandeerd, in EKKO, een 2,5 uur lange set dikke dub van High Tone! Na het experimentele uitstapje op 'Wave Digger' doen de Franse meesters sinds het vorig jaar verschenen 'Underground Wobble' weer waar ze écht goed in zijn; het creëeren van dub met onderhuids borrelende oriëntaalse invloeden, rock, hip-hop en electro. Sample-tovenaar en scratch-virtuoos DJ Twelve voegt daar nog wat flarden filmmuziek aan toe, en maakt er met de rest van de live-band een super relaxed geheel van.

Dj's Smartin en Cold Sweat vullen de avond in met dikke, likkebaardend lekkere dubsounds. Jummy!

Hey everybody,
Met JiskFilm heeft onze vriend ex-Godzilla-Kris tijdens het Nederlands Film Festival meegedaan met het 48 hour Film fest, ofwel: maak een film in 48 uur.
6 minuten voor tijd hebben ze de film "Klik" ingeleverd in de versie zoals die nu on-line staat. Een "directors cut" volgt binnenkort.....Klik heeft o.a. de prijzen gewonnen voor beste script en beste actrice. Al met al zijn we op een hele mooie tweede plaats in de competitie ge-eindigt.
