superNOtural festival

Supernatural Festival op het Westergasterrein in Amsterdam gaat dit jaar niet door. De Nieuwe Revu kopte deze week nog dat ID&T en Supernatural een samenwerking beklonken zouden hebben, maar niets is minder waar. Organisator van Supernatural Michel Matthijssen heeft in het verleden wel gesprekken gevoerd met de dance-gigant, maar deze liepen uiteindelijk spaak op de openstaande rekeningen die Supernatural nog moet betalen. Om hoeveel geld het gaat, wil Mathijssen niet zeggen. Zowel ID&T als Matthijssen zelf zien geen heil in het voortzetten van Supernatural Festival. In ieder geval niet dit jaar.

Last Saturday: Elephantsound System @ De Raad, Alkmaar

Last Saturday Elephantsounds played areal nice party in Alkmaar. The final party at De Raad turned out to be a real killer, three floors with loads of bands and deejays. The place was totally packed (maybe 300 people?) and sweat was dripping of the walls as the Elephant Soundsystem played form 3.30 till 5.20 (Originally we we're supposed to play 50 minutes). Everybody danced, it was great! Big up to everybody at De Raad for organizing this fine final party!

Next Saturday Elephant soundsystem was invited to appear on the last party at De Raad in Alkmaar, a beautifull & large squatted building which unfortunately is being tore down in order to build new expensive appartements. Wedn 22 March: Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed (Ethiopia) visits the ACU(Utrecht)

Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed from Ethiopia is a blind singer from Addis Abeba and will present his first album at the Acu this wednesday. The album was recorded at the Moers Jazz Festival last year, before he already appeard on the Ex-festival. He will be accompagnied by Mesele Asmamaw on krar (5-string harp) and Asnake Gebreyes on drums. So check out this African experience!

ELEPHANT SOUNDS!

Due to the 30 year anniversary festivities of our resident venue ACU, there won't be an edition of ElephantSounds in march. Sad, but true. In april, however, we will be pumping the reggaematic sounds twice as hard, rough and heavy for ya! See you then?

Studio One and its producer Clement Dodd are essential in understanding reggae and music in general. The Heartbeat label released many essential Studio One compilations and albums and their website now features a 12:49 movie about the history of Jamaica & Studio one. Absolutely recommended!

In Memoriam: Raymond "Ray" Barretto

Drummer and bandleader: born New York 29 April 1929; married 1978 Brandy Rivera (three sons, one daughter); died Hackensack, New Jersey 17 February 2006.

Ray Barretto, the towering Puerto Rican percussionist who straddled the occasionally conflicting worlds of salsa and Latin jazz during a career that spanned more than half a century, died Friday. He was 76.

Barretto, who had asthma, was hospitalized last month in New Jersey, where it was discovered he had suffered a heart attack. He was also treated for pneumonia and later underwent quadruple bypass surgery. His condition suddenly worsened because of unspecified complications, according to longtime friend and family spokesman George Rivera, who declined to state a cause of death. "He fought to the bitter end," Rivera said. "There was never any doubt in his mind that he was going to play again. If he could survive, he was going to play, because that was his mission in life."
